We really struggled 3 years ago because of the drought, but thanks to a very generous young (farmer) bowler who supplied us with water for free over the past 2 years, our green is brilliant & will stack up very well in our inaugural Premier season.
In the past 3 months (with the council's financial help), we put down a bore & have now got a good supply of water so the inferior greens we endured should be behind us.

In my calculations Mt Xavier is currently the most successful club in the BRBA.

-5 years ago had 3 teams: Div 1, Div 4 and 7
-now 4 teams: Prem, Div 3, Div 5, and division 7

Only one 8-rink green, so they cannot expand anymore, may have to enforce a waiting list to become a member.

-don't pay players
-are going into the Premier League with basically the same team that got them there, after winning the Grand-Final as underdog against Avenue.
-use "current form" as the basis of their selection policy.
-Mt Xavier (a neighbour to Victoria Bowling Club) has traditionally been a feeder club to the Victoria Premier team.

Good luck John! - enjoy the year.

04-09-2008, 11:44 AM
 Dey all are pickin on me again

Im sure the locals know what im talking about regards the quality bowlers they had produced at Mt Xavier.

Always had been a good and friendly club, and many of Ballarats best made their way up the ranks starting out there, and my question relating to the new bunch was simply based on the fact that im not totally conversant with many of the newer breed in Ballarat.

But hey Premier League in Ballarat is virtually only a glorified 1 grade anyhow, and any bowler wanting a game in the ballarat premier league and had just a wisp of ability could easily get a run in one of the weaker clubs ;)

colliwobbles
04-09-2008, 11:53 AM
Torrita, thanks for the acknowledgement of Mt Xavier's achievements over the past few years.
In 2003-4 season while struggling for numbers we won the Div 7 flag, and because of those lack of numbers, ended up back in Div 8.
A concerted effort saw an influx of younger members (20 to 40 year olds) and we fielded a 4th team (squeezing them onto our 8 rink green).
2006-7 we won Div 4 and Div 6
2007-8 we won Div 1 and Div 8
Our goal now is to consolidate our position in Premier league basically with the bowlers who got us there.
Attempt to win Div 3 & Div 5 so we can close the gap between those divisions and our Premier side, otherwise the transition from for a Div 3 bowler to Premier will be extremely tough.
The great thing is that we have broken that hoodoo of never winning the Div 1 premiership in our clubs 48 year history, even though (as players at the club point out), they came close in the past. There is a huge difference between coming close and winning.
We're looking forward to testing ourselves out against our Premier counterparts this season & we start with a practice match against our mates at Victoria at the end of Sept.
Good luck to everyone as you go into the new season & above all, enjoy the ride.

Ballarat/Geelong premier league is the strongest 5 Ballarat teams plus the strongest 5 Geelong teams. (Parts of 2 Groups), so it is probably stronger than the other 6 country group pennant competitions.
Whereas, Melbourne Premier League is the strongest 10 teams from all of Melbourne(All of 8 Groups), so you can judge how much stronger Melbourne Premier is cf Ballarat/Geelong.

Victoria is split up into 16 groups, 8 metro and 8 country. (I just thought I would mention this for non-mexicans)
