On Monday January 4 Barooga Sports Bowls Club conducted the prestigious Under 19 Country Singles handing out over $1000 in prize money to winners of this event.

Some notable entrants included members of the male Under 18 State Squad topped up with other talented individuals from both country Victoria and New South Wales and metropolitan Victoria. In all 20 young bowlers contested this event.

Initial rounds were sectional with winners of the 5 sections and the best 3 runners up progressing to post sectional knockout play. Post sectional matches were scored over 11 live ends.

When it came down to the last four, Nathan Mills (Bundoora RSL), Liam Garlick-Adams (Neerim District), Cain Hanley (Tocumwal) and Heath Smith (Cobram) survived.

Smith defeated Hanley in a tightly contested game. Garlick-Adams was triumpant over Mills. This set up a very intense final between Smith and Garlick-Adams.

In a game of precise bowling, Smith gained the advantage early by nabbing four shots on the first end but Garlick-Adams was not to be denied. Consistant draw bowls by both players saw Garlick-Adams pinch back the lead on end 8, making the score 9-8.

Smith went on to collect a single and a three to regain the lead and with Garlick-Adams requiring at least two to force a tie. However Garlick-Adams was denied, scoring only a single on the final end and going down by the narrowest of margins, 11-10. Heath Smith collected $400 with Liam receiving $200

In the play off for 3rd. and 4th. Nathan Mils and Cain Hanley played some tight ends with good line and length with Nathan outlasting the fast finishing Cain to take 3rd prize of 175 and Cain 4th $125. Four other sectional play off winners received $50 each making it a great payday for all the contestants.

At the presentation Heath Smith thanked the Tournament Director Geoff Mitchell and Barooga Sports Bowls Club for the initiative event and all hoped to see more entrants for 2011.
