  1. No Toffs at Toorak Bowls Club

No Toffs at Toorak Bowls Club

One of this countries most exclusive post codes- 3142 is home to a terrific bowls club whose members are by and large a bunch of knock about blokes light years away from the hallmarks of what this postcode represents,
    Money, Power, Success and Status.
The club manages to successfully shatter stereo types.
And flies the flag of Tradition.
While most metropolitan clubs have succumbed to the introduction of World Series Cricket like ...

  2. Old Olympian, Get's Another Shot

‘Old Olympian’ gets another Shot !

Our sport sees us regularly coming across competitive, fit and robust seniors on the green.
But it’s not everyday you come across a former ‘Olympian’ on the mat.

Ivan Gaal was selected to represent Australia at the 1960 Rome Olympics.
This was an era when athletes in non high profile sports, such as canoeing were expected to pay their own way.
Having escaped his native Hungary after the Soviet invasion in 1956, economic ...

  3. A Triangle of Resting Touchers and Unwanted Sexual Advances on the Green.

A Triangle of Resting Touchers and Unwanted Sexual Advances on the Green.

The Carlton Classic invariably attracts a motley crew of characters from a wide range of clubs. This year was no different.

We saw the usual pre game posturing and grand standing from the usual suspects as they mingled with friends and foes in Bowls World. Exchanging stories and regurgitating past glories on the green.

I liken some of these blokes exchanging ‘kitty trailing’ ...

  4. Bad Boys - Pains in the Ass on the Green

    Serial Pests in Bowls

I liken Paul Soldatich to Kimchi- Korean ******d cabbage .

Lap it up, or put it down as an offensive distraction to the main meal-game.

They’re both very much an acquired taste.

I remember a Scottish bloke from Footscray Yarraville saying , “How do you put up with this clown every week, he’d do my head in.”

[ delivered in a broad Glaswegian accent].

  5. Bowls Legends

    Bowls Legends

It’s not every day that you have the pleasure to come up against and beat a Bowls Legend, albeit one past their prime. We played Thornbury in a semi final on Tuesday and Jean Chick came up to me after the game and said, “ those orange bowls of yours were over that kitty all day.”

Jean’s accomplishments are legendary and she’s hogged her club’s honour board for decades. You could facetiously say that Thornbury Bowls Club is a pseudo shrine to her ...
