      Match Report, Round-3
      Premier Division. MCC-Kew v Mentone
      Sat 17th October @ Barkers Road

      MCC-KEW WIN 3-IN-A-ROW.

      “Wow!” - 3-wins in a row. Who would have thought that 4-weeks ago?
      Can you really believe that MCC-Kew has lost only one match since last December 2013? - and this new season, after being promoted to Premier Division, we’ve now taken the points off Clayton (reigning premiers) Melbourne (last years finalist) & now Mentone in the first three rounds.

      The premier division clubs pre-season talk, was to expect MCC-Kew to be nothing more threatening than cannon fodder this season, and out of our league at this elite level. “Well, think again folks, because you have every reason to be nervous about playing us, on your patch or ours!!”

      This round-3 match was going to be the test of whether the first 2 wins were just a fairytale, or the real deal, if we could knock off Mentone’s youthfulness at home on our show-green carpet, running around 16 seconds.

      We got away positively, leading 25/23 after 28 ends, and at 35-ends Mentone had drawn level, (30/30) - which is the point where MCC-Kew had a lapse across the rinks dropping a few multiples, & letting Mentone scoot away to a 10 shot lead on the main board.

      3 of our rinks had let Mentone slip through to the lead, with only Ray Jansen’s rink holding on leading 14/10, and the main board showing MCC-Kew trailing 36/46 after 45 ends. It was a case right then of “lift it or lose it” as we’ve done in the first 2 rounds, to come from behind when we were trailing at around the half-way mark, and this was going to be another ‘mental-toughness’ test.

      It was a high-spirited & highly talented dog fight for the next 18 ends, with MCC-Kew pulling Mentone back & finally taking a one-shot lead (70/69) with 12-ends to play.
      That’s when the Pervaz rink snatched a 5+shot head & Jansen’s rink closed down the Mentone threat with 5+ shots over their last couple of ends.

      The shutters came down on Mentone & their afternoon ended with MCC-Kew taking 16 points 88/72 & winning by 16-shots

      A Few Rink Highlights;

      • The Chris Ball rink had a one-shot lead (7/6) after 9-ends, but then dropped a 5- on the 10th. Ouch!.

      Shocked into a reality check, they simply shut out Mentone from then on, dropping only one-more-shot over the remaining 11-ends, winning 10 of them, to take the 2 rink points 20/12. They won 14 of the 21 ends.

      • Garry Ball’s rink trailed Mentone from the 4th end to the 18th, - where they’d clawed back their 7-shot deficit by scoring 8-shots over 4-ends & regaining the lead 17/16. But that’s where it ended & they dropped the next 2-ends, giving away 5 x shots, & going down by 3-. 18/21

      • Peter Perva’s rink was the amazing story of the day. After a jump start to lead 4/2 they dropped consecutively – 3 x 3’s & a 5- to trail Mentone 4/16, and after only 8-ends. But then, as if someone put a spirit in the drinking water, they just thundered their way back to the lead, winning the next 9-ends on the trot. And just for good measure, claimed a 5+ on the 20th end to put paid to any doubt about their credentials, winning the 2+ rink points 27/22

      • Ray Jansen’s rink showed it’s class, by leading their rink score board from start to finish. They were only really threatened on the 18th-end when they dropped a 4 & things got tight. But they slipped back into harness quickly winning the remaining 3-ends and walking off the green 23/17 winners.
