      Victorian Over 60’s Singles Finals

      This year’s State Championships Calendar of State Finals commences this coming week with the combined Men’s & Women’s Over 60’s Singles finals being conducted at the Ocean Grove BC. Wednesday morning the 19th November the final 16 in each of the two fields will begin their advance towards booking a place in the finals on Thursday afternoon.
      2013 Champions Robyn Thomassen and Barry Brennan don’t feature in this year’s finals, but in what appears to be an unusual twist of fate, Barry’s brother Kevin from the same club (Moama) will be doing battle in round one against Altona’s Len Callus in a match that could well determine positions in the final. On paper the field in the Men’s event contains quite a number of players capable of featuring in the final outcome of the event.
      The same applies in the Women’s field where there are a number of well-credentialed and seasoned performers. An early round bye for Anne Miles from the Ovens & Murray Region might not be advantageous for her in her quest to capture this title, but there are a number of very interesting first round clashes that are certainly going to thin the field out for the subsequent knockout rounds on Wednesday afternoon and into Thursday morning’s semis. If you have the chance, get along to Ocean Grove BC and witness some very interesting matches that are sure to be played in a very competitive spirit. Click here for all of the draw details and the competing players and their club details for the Regions they are representing.

      Tackle the issue: Ice, Alcohol and Other Drug Forum

      Regional Bowls Manager Barrie Lester has bought this item to our attention and we consider there is value in supporting any initiative that helps to deal with the issue of drugs in our society. With the support of the Victorian Government and a number of local community partners, the Australian Drug Foundation’s Good Sports program is proud to be holding a series of forums around Victoria to help clubs and their members learn how their sports club can support their members, families and the community to prevent and tackle drug use. These forums, which are already underway, are hosted by experts in drug prevention and treatment who help us understand practical ways that can reduce drug problems and help people live happy and healthy lives. In total there are 19 forums taking place around metropolitan and regional Victoria. The Frankston City and Mornington Peninsula Shire will be hosting a forum on Monday 24 November at Peninsula Community Theatre. Others are set down in December for places such as Springvale, Inverloch and Werribee. Dates and places for 2015 will be advised soon on the website.http://goodsports.com.au/tackletheissue/forums/
      What will clubs learn at the forum?

      • How to develop a policy to deal with ice and illicit drug-related issues
      • Implementing & reinforcing the policy
      • Sample ice/illicit drug policy and ‘must haves’
      • Responding to an ice related issue;
      • Club responsibilities & duty of care
      • Educating club players & members
      • Confidentiality
      • What resources are available to support club leaders confidently manage ice/illicit drug-related issues

      Several of these forums have been successfully conducted already, but if there is a forthcoming date that you can lock in to your calendar, people are encouraged to register as soon as possible, so please visit http://goodsports.com.au/tackletheissue/forums/ to register and guarantee your place.
