      Bowls Legends

It’s not every day that you have the pleasure to come up against and beat a Bowls Legend, albeit one past their prime. We played Thornbury in a semi final on Tuesday and Jean Chick came up to me after the game and said, “ those orange bowls of yours were over that kitty all day.”

Jean’s accomplishments are legendary and she’s hogged her club’s honour board for decades. You could facetiously say that Thornbury Bowls Club is a pseudo shrine to her accomplishments over the last 4 decades.

When you’re up against top bowlers your game lifts in my reckoning. And that was my experience in that finals match. Unfortunately our other rinks went down and Thornbury booked themselves a Grand Final berth against Bundoora RSL.

Thornbury is a terrific ‘old school’ club just off High Street. It’s nestled within a residential neighbourhood and it really engages with its community. I really enjoy the feel of these inner city clubs steeped in history and tradition, as opposed to that veneer aesthetic which I encounter at some of the bigger clubs around the traps. Call me a sentimentalist but being on the Green and seeing blokes walk out of a block of flats in their whites and cross the road to walk through the gates to their bowls club [ I saw this at Thornbury ] gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.

But in the words of Brian Wilson, ‘I just wasn’t meant for these times.’

Santo Caruso, the owner of Melbourne Sports Books was disappointed with Princess Park’s loss. But all round Thornbury were the better team on the day and the scoreboard proved it.
