Retirement of Bowls Victoria Director Graeme Hosken

Bowls Victoria would like to take this opportunity to publicly acknowledge the service of Life Member Graeme Hosken who recently retired as a Board Director after serving in that capacity since amalgamation in 2009 and for a number of years prior with the RVBA.
During Graeme’s involvement at all levels of administration both inside and outside of the association, Graeme’s knowledge and expertise in many areas has been part of a major contribution he has made to the sport of Bowls and the members of the organisations he has represented in his capacity as President of both the RVBA & Bowls Victoria during his times in those respective roles. Graeme was awarded Life Membership of Bowls Victoria in 2012 and this acknowledgement of his service to Bowls complemented his commitment to ensuring that the sport was being carried forward in a strong position and being well placed for the future.

The Board of Bowls Victoria welcomes to its ranks Stuart Kollmorgen in the role as an Appointed Director. State Pennant Championships – Midweek & Saturday

Bowls Victoria has advised cluBarham that it will not be continuing with the Champion of State Pennant events for both Saturday & Midweek Pennant. Informing cluBarham of this decision was done after Bowls Victoria began a process at the end of the 2014 event held in May whereby a survey of Division 1 clubs around the state was conducted to canvas if the competing clubs and/or players would be prepared to pay their own associated costs for accommodation to attend both of these events. The response of the clubs answering the survey was an overwhelming no, so as a result the events will not be continued. Further to this, the expectations placed on Bowls Victoria to deliver events for all of our members and for there not to be any costs borne by clubs or individuals is unrealistic and we simply do not have the available funds to keep doing it.
Over the last ten years, these events have been very successfully conducted in Barham with the generous support of cluBarham, and wish to take this opportunity on behalf of the Board of Bowls Victoria, the competing clubs, their bowlers, officials and spectators, to thank cluBarham for their generous support of this event and to the Barham Services BC as host club for the great work undertaken by their many volunteers in presenting their venue in first class condition over those years.

Metropolitan Saturday & Midweek Pennant Result Check Forms

The reminder in last week’s Bulletin was prompted by the fact that a number of clubs who have received walkovers in the early weeks of competition need to send in a Pennant Check Form so that the players nominated for those games can have that match recorded for qualification purposes that will certainly apply for clubs that make finals later in the year.
What also has to be considered and applied by clubs is that the Pennant Check Form is the official result of the match and it must be submitted for the purposes of authenticating the online entry or the phone-in score of the match from the previous Saturday or Tuesday in respect of Metropolitan Pennant. In general most clubs are pretty good in how they go about this, but there have been some instances of clubs not sending in Pennant Check forms until three weeks after a match has been played. Please, just check your process at Club level and try to get those forms in as quickly as possible so scores and ladders reflect the true situation of all Divisions.

Under 18 State Championship Event Entries

Entry forms for the Under 18 Championships are online and available to be sent back to Bowls Victoria. Entries for the Under 18 Male & Female Pairs Championships close on Monday 17 November 2014.

      Bowlers Arm Coaching Day

Shepparton Park BC has shown why it is chosen to host the Victorian Open with the running of a hugely successful Bowlers Arm Coaching Day last Sunday. Ninety players registered for the event sponsored by Bowls Victoria and jointly run by the Club and the Victorian Arm Bowlers State Side members. This was the first foray into country Victoria and by the favourable responses from the players which were summed up by Kerry Ralph when she thanked Bowls Victoria Director Phil Gude for bringing the Coaching day to Central Victoria. “This proves we are on the map, the help was fantastic and I know the players all benefited from this experience. We are so pleased you came to the country.” she said.
Mr. Gude said, “Bowls Victoria will be taking the Arm Coaching to Ballarat on the 25th January 2015 and players in that area should register quickly to avoid disappointment. Register with the Sebastopol BC by email bowls@sebasbowlingclub.com.au or the Club Secretary Phone 03 5336 4601 and this will be followed at Geelong on 3 May 2015. Full details can be found on the BV Website.” The Shepparton Park BC event was supported by State Arm Bowlers/Coaches led by Mike Scotter senior coach, Adele Ryan, Tony Long, Peter Gribbin, Ray Bezett and Ian Ridley. Mr Gude further stated, “as with so many of the Bowls Victoria volunteers the Arm Bowlers want to give back to the Sport in appreciation of the support and opportunity we have received and the team did a fantastic job yet again.”
BV Chief Executive Graeme Bridge said, “The Sport of Bowls would not survive without our great and loyal band of volunteers who activate our events and education programs.”

      Victorian Open 2014

When entries closed for this event last Friday there was much excitement when the numbers for each event were tallied and delivered a figure of in excess of 930 over the seven events to be conducted. We’re delighted to say that for this year’s event we have far exceeded expectations and have eclipsed the total number of entries for any past year (788 in total in 2013) that the event has been conducted. Tournament Director Barb Gilbert is overwhelmed by the response that the bowlers of Victoria have shown for the event to be staged at host Club Shepparton Park BC and Clubs in the Goulburn Valley BC commencing 23 November. Barb stated, “I was always confident that the bowlers of Victoria would support the event even though there was no longer any qualification to the Australian Open attached to the event. What gives me a lot of satisfaction is that the clubs who’ll be assisting with staging play in the event will have good numbers and an opportunity to showcase their respective venues.”

Bowls Victoria Publication – Guidance to New Bowlers – Reprinted 2013

Bowlers who have purchased the current version of this very handy resource may notice that on Page 15 under the heading of Players Duties – Seconds, it incorrectly states that the keeping of the scorecard is the role of the second which of course is now not correct as this responsibility belongs with the Skips who under the laws of the sport are required to keep the scorecard in all team disciplines of the game.

Men’s Region Sides Championship 2015 – Side Information

Next week information and nomination sheets will be forwarded to Region Secretaries for them to provide back to Bowls Victoria the required details relating to their teams to contest this season’s event at Corowa Civic BC in January 2015. The return of information date has been extended this year by one week and is required to be submitted by no later than Monday 1 December 2014.

      Over 60’s Singles & Pairs - Men & Women

Just a reminder that names of Region Representatives in these events are due at Bowls Victoria by Friday 7 November 2014 for the Singles and Friday 14 November 2014 for the Pairs.
Hope everyone backs the winner of the Melbourne Cup next Tuesday!
